On Monday, August 4th, a woman named Leslie Mann reportedly witnessed a horrendous act of animal cruelty as she watched a Jack Russell Terrier being beaten and strangled. Animal Control and the Police Department failed to make an arrest or go out to the scene of the crime in a timely manner, where Ms. Mann waited for an hour, hoping help would come. While we greatly appreciate our law enforcement officers and understand budget concerns, animal cruelty is still a crime that MUST be investigated. This type of animal cruelty is a violent crime towards animals, and it is well known that individuals who commit violent crimes against animals are likely to commit violent crimes against humans as well. We ask our highly respected law enforcement officers to please protect us from offenders and help stop the cycle of violence. We are counting on them!
If this situation upsets you as it has upset others, you can write the Police and State Attorney, asking them to push for felony animal cruelty charges against the alleged abuser!
Here is Ms. Mann's account of this situation, which has already begun to spark outrage across Florida:
I hope that you will take a moment to read today's Sun-Sentinel blog written by Michael Mayo, which provides an overview of a case of animal cruelty that I witnessed one week ago, on Monday, August 4.
Since witnessing this event, I became a ping pong ball between the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department and the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Office and am now, as I write, eight days out with still no firm confirmation on the health and safety of the abused dog. My purpose in writing is not to point fingers at either agency, but to bring attention to what may be a systematic communication failure between the agencies and, of course, to purse action against the perpetrator, if such action is warranted. The details of my case follow below.
As we know, sometimes it takes a mass audience to garner attention to a cause.
The name of this cause is NICK, and he is a Jack Russell Terrier.
I am coming to you today to ask that you crosspost this information to your respective followings and, as collective voices, we ask Ft. Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley, Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Director Earl Bosworth, and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to immediately take action on my case to ensure for the safety and well-being of Nick, the animal victim, and to review their policies/procedures/protocols to see what changes, if any, are needed so that no further reports of animal cruelty fall through the cracks between two very well intentioned and respected agencies.
